I had the same problem on my stairs and in one of the bedrooms. I highly recommend Citristrip or paint stripper, unless you’re trying to preserve the finish underneath. The chemicals soften the padding and adhesive, making it a LOT less difficult to scrape off. I used Citristrip because the smell was less offensive, and I was working indoors in the winter. Good luck!
Ha! It looks like he is! Way back there in the background of the last picture (in case any of you out there didn’t notice him.) Actually, yesterday, Zoot reached up to scratch at the wall and pulled off a big chunk of the black adhesive that’s left over from the paneling. We almost yelled at him for scratching at the wall, but thought, ah, what the heck. He’s helping!
have you tried putting water on it and letting it sit for a bit before scraping? I had some weird stuff under old linoleum, and that helped to remove it.

And it looks like Scratch is helping, too!

Hi Jenne,
Yup! That’s exactly what I’m doing! See my post: http://ournewoldhouse.wordpress.com/2007/11/06/carpet-padding-moster-meet-thy-doom/ to see my technique.
