Thanks for the comments, folks! Pokeberry, huh? It's a gonner. I'm gonna mow it all down until I have time to actually dig the weeds up by the roots.

Oh, and Di, the specific undergrowth I'm talking about isn't in that picture. Sorry. I'll see if I can find some actual poison ivy later on.

Thanks for reading, everybody!

Yep, that's a weed. Also, your undergrowth doesn't look like poison ivy to me. I have similar weeds that come up in my woods, but I don't know what they are. Just to be sure, could you post a better picture? Better safe than sorry!

Been a lurker for awhile now. Hello! Just wanted to drop you a note that the "tall, shooty thing" looks like pokeberry, Phytolacca americana, coming up. Took me FOREVER to ID it when it was coming up in my first year at this house. By then, it was far too late...

Most people consider it a weed though it does have medicinal and even culinary uses. It is generally poisonous and has a taproot like a *insert curse word here*. If you plan to get rid of it, you'll have to dig very carefully and get ALL of that root because even a small bit left behind will get you another plant.
