I ripped out the carpet in the bathroom this week. It smelled like pee. Here’s Zoot sitting on the carpet one last time:
Under the carpet was some nasty padding:
And under that was some wierd old flooring that looks like those marble colored rubber balls that come with a jacks set.
Anyway, that smelled like mildew. I put down some baking soda and left it there overnight. That got rid of the smell. Now it’s just ugly. But it’s better than pee-smelling carpet.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI found nasty mold growing behind a cabinet in my bathroom. Didn’t smell but quite disturbing.
I never understood why people put carpeting in the bathroom! The vanity portion of our master bath is connected to the bedroom w/o a door. The carpet from the bedroom extends to in front of the vanity. Its not as bad as straight carpet in the bathroom, but its close! Can’t wait to see the end result.
I bet it’s actual linoleum! I’m not a big fan of carpet in bathrooms… just asking for trouble if you ask me!
My cat did the same thing and “went” over our basement tile floors and furniture. We tried washing it out, but the stench remained. Baking soda would definitely have helped. Would you put in carpet or tile for your floor?
Oh no, not another bathroom with carpet. I’ve got one of those here. It’s upstairs which means I only see it about once a week, but I can’t wait to tackle that project. Not only doe the bathroom in question have ’70s plush pink carpet, but it has a whirlpool tub that is paneled along with the walls in really bad plastic “faux” stone.
